Friday Memes

Book Beginnings on Friday is a bookish meme sponsored by Katy at A Few More Pages. Here's what you do: Share the first line (or two) of the book you are currently reading on your blog or in the comments section. Include the title and author so we know what you're reading. Then, if you are so moved, let us know what your first impressions were based on that first line and if you did or did not like that sentence. Link up each week at Katy's place.

Here's mine
from The Red Lamp by Mary Roberts Rinehart:

(Introduction to the Journal of William A. Porter, A.B., M.A., PhD, Litt.D., etc)

A few weeks ago, at dinner, a discussion arose as to the unfinished dramas recorded in the daily press. The argument was, if I remember correctly, that they give us the beginning of many stories, and the endings of as many more. But that what followed those beginnings, or preceded those endings, was seldom or never told.

The Friday 56 is a bookish meme sponsored by Freda's Voice. It is really easy to participate. Just grab a book, any book, and turn to page 56. Find a sentence that grabs you and post it.
Here's mine from The Red Lamp by Mary Roberts Rinehart:

"I happen to specialize in upsetting teacups."

Well, it is nice to have a specialty. I'm not sure that I would want that one to be mine though. Hope you get out of your reading and blogging slump soon.

Great excerpts! I've never read this author, but I'm thinking I should. Thanks for sharing...and for visiting my blog.

LOL What a visual!

That's an intriguing quotation. It certainly was written about a time before 24/7 cable "news". I'm going to check on this book. Thanks for the tip!

Hello! Thanks for dropping by my blog!

"I happen to specialize in upsetting teacups."

Hey I think one of my uncles is an expert on that too. I have been at the receiving end of at least two of those upsets.

Upsetting teacups? Now there's a specialty I have never heard of before. I'm not sure if the beginning would intrigue me enough to continue reading but the 56 certainly grabs me.
